Before installation

How to Prepare an Opening for a New Door

The opening must do more than fit the door. Its supporting construction and connections must be suitable for the selected door system, its weight and the loads created in use. Confirm the system before finishing or modifying the opening.

01

Can my opening support the door?

For a hinged door, review the hinges, frame, anchors and supporting wall construction together. Frame anchorage must suit the wall type and follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions. The weight rating of a hinge alone does not establish the capacity of the complete opening. If the supporting construction is uncertain or needs alteration, have the project’s qualified contractor or structural professional assess it before installation.

02

Pivot doors need a different support check

Some pivot systems transfer the door’s weight through a bottom pivot into the floor. FritsJurgens describes this load path for its systems and stresses the floor’s load-bearing capacity. Confirm the selected system’s support and fixing requirements; do not assume a decorative floor finish is sufficient. This is an example of a system detail, not a claim that every TrueFrames door uses that hardware.

03

What should be ready before installation?

Check opening dimensions, plumb, level and squareness against the specific frame instructions. Coordinate finished floor height and wall thickness before final sizing. Rough-opening clearances and anchor arrangements are system-specific: a single allowance does not fit every door.

  • Identify the door model, size, weight and operating system
  • Share the wall construction and any known damage or previous alterations
  • Confirm the planned floor and wall finishes
  • Keep the opening accessible for measurement and inspection
04

Who handles repairs or reinforcement?

Tell us about any loose frame, damaged opening or planned structural change when requesting your quote. The proposal should identify opening preparation, who performs it and when it must be complete. A free measurement visit helps define the door package; it is not a substitute for structural design when the project needs it.

05

What should I send TrueFrames?

Send your city, approximate opening dimensions, door preference and photographs of both sides. For new construction or a large remodel, include the door schedule and available opening details. We offer free on-site measurements in South Florida and coordinate the final specifications before production.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you begin.

Does every heavy door require the same reinforcement?

No. The appropriate support depends on the door system and the existing construction. Use the selected system’s instructions and a project-specific assessment rather than a generic reinforcement detail.

Should I build the opening before choosing the door?

Choose the system and obtain its frame and opening requirements first. This is particularly useful for concealed frames, pivot systems and rated exterior openings.
