How to Verify Impact and Fire Door Ratings

Ask for documentation that matches the actual door model and configuration. A product photograph, a heavy door leaf or a general “hurricane-proof” claim does not establish an impact or fire rating.

01

For an impact door, match the approval to the opening

Identify the manufacturer, series and applicable approval number. Review the approved dimensions, configuration, impact designation, positive and negative design pressures, and installation details for the proposed product. Miami-Dade’s guidance calls for current product approval documents and project pressure information; requirements depend on the project and jurisdiction. A product approval does not by itself approve every installation.

02

Use the official approval records

Start with the Florida Product Approval search or Miami-Dade Product Control records, as applicable. Ask your project professional to confirm that the selected configuration and installation conditions meet the opening’s requirements. Keep the approval and installation drawings with the quote and project documents.

03

For a fire door, check the complete assembly

UL’s application guide explains that the door, frame, glazing and hardware must be suitable together for the required opening. Check the applicable certification labels and product documentation. A fire-rated leaf alone does not establish the suitability of the entire installation. Do not assume field alterations or replacement hardware preserve the rating; confirm them against the listing and manufacturer’s requirements.

04

Fire and impact ratings answer different questions

If a project requires both, request evidence for both requirements on the proposed assembly. Avoid using one approval as proof of another performance claim. Share the opening ID and all specified ratings with your request so the quote can identify the intended system.

05

What should I ask for in my quote?

Request the proposed manufacturer and model, configuration, required ratings and applicable documentation. TrueFrames reviews the specified door package with your inquiry. This guide does not certify a model or advertise an approval number for an unspecified product. Send your plans or door schedule to start a project-specific review.
