What moves the door price from $800 to $3,000
Two things decide where a hidden door falls in the range: its size and its style. Standard heights with a surface prepared for paint sit toward the lower end. Tall and floor-to-ceiling doors, wide leaves and special styles sit toward the upper end.
- Height and width: a floor-to-ceiling leaf is larger, heavier and needs stronger concealed hinges.
- Style and surface: a paint-ready face, a wood veneer or a face prepared for wall panels.
- Opening direction: a door that opens away from the flush side, or toward it, uses a different frame.
- Hardware: concealed hinges, magnetic latches and push-to-open or flush handles.
- Double or very large openings.
Why finishing is a separate line
A hidden door only looks hidden once the wall and the door are finished together. The concealed frame is set into the wall, and then the door and the surrounding surface are finished so the joint is the only thing you see. That work starts at $450. It costs more for larger doors, for finishes that take more steps and when the wall around the door needs more work.
If the door will be covered with wall panels instead of paint, the panels are planned and priced as part of the wall. Our guide to hidden doors with wall panels explains how the two fit together.
Hidden door vs. standard door
A standard interior swing door costs $650 to $700 as a complete set with frame, trim and hardware, plus $350 for installation. A hidden door costs more because the frame is built into the wall, the hinges are concealed and the opening has to be finished flush.
| Standard swing door | Hidden door | |
|---|---|---|
| Door | $650–$700 (complete set) | $800–$3,000 |
| Installation | $350 | $350 |
| Finishing | Not usually needed | From $450 |
| Typical total | $1,000–$1,050 | About $1,600–$3,800+ |
| Visible frame and trim | Yes | No |
Costs that depend on the wall
The prices above assume a wall that can take a concealed frame. Some walls need more work first, and the quote lists it separately when they do.
- Opening a finished wall or enlarging the opening
- Making the wall thick or strong enough for the frame
- Moving switches, outlets or vents that sit where the door goes
- Removing an existing door and frame
- Wall panels on the door and the surrounding wall
When to plan a hidden door
The best time is during a renovation or a new condo build-out, before the walls are finished. The frame goes in with the wall, and the finishing happens with the rest of the room. Adding a hidden door to a finished wall is possible but means more wall work. Book the free measurement and we will check the wall and quote the door, installation and finishing separately.
A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS
Before you begin.
How much does a hidden door cost installed?
About $1,600 to $3,800 and up: $800 to $3,000 for the door depending on size and style, $350 for installation and from $450 for finishing.
Why is the finishing priced separately?
Because it depends on the door size, the finish and the wall around it. Listing it separately lets you see what the door, the installation and the finishing each cost.
Is a floor-to-ceiling hidden door more expensive?
Yes. Tall doors sit toward the upper end of the $800–$3,000 range because the leaf is larger and heavier and needs stronger concealed hinges.
Can you install a hidden door in an existing wall?
Often, yes. It means opening the wall around the door, so we check the wall at the free measurement and include any extra work in the quote.
